Ouch! What was that?! A shark? A stingray? Nope! It's a jellyfish! Jellyfish are invertebrates that belong to the animal group phylum Cnidaria. Although jellyfish are name after their jelly-like appearance they are most well known for their sting. Jellyfish have cells on their tentacles called cnidocytes inside these cells there are poisonous weapon like structures that are set off when touched ,therefore penetrating the body of the victim. Although there are many methods on what to do after being stung by a jellyfish most people advise rinsing in warm water then dousing in vinegar. Although not all jellyfish sting it is estimated that 150 million people worldwide are stung by jellyfish each year. So, next time you go on the beach be careful and watch for jellyfish in the water and sand!
